Stromboli is the most spectacular, and perhaps the most famous of the Aeolian Islands. This is thanks to its active volcano, causing explosions of incandescent lava and creates the Sciara del Fuoco, a cast that reaches for the sea. The lava is about 700 meters long and wide, at least at sea level, almost a kilometer. Below the sea level continues its descent to at least 500 meters. The night vision of explosions and lava is unforgettable. The island consists of a single volcano, which can be climbed with a walk of about three hours. It is very hard, but well worth it. There are two tiny but charming towns on the island: Stromboli, which is a fraction of Lipari, and Ginostra. Ginostra is located south of the island, is normally inhabited by 50 people. There are no cars and electricity is generated by solar panels. Its port, port Pertuso, is considered the world's smallest.
Even at Stromboli beaches are black sand. The most famous is Old Forge, and Ficogrande, in front of which sits the basalt cliffs of Strombolicchio. Ginostra is located near the Wading pools, a small, quiet cove.
